ChatGPT: Beginner to Pro

Most people type a one-line request and wonder why ChatGPT gives a generic answer. This is the four-step method that fixes it. The example prompt below puts all four steps together so you can see how it looks in practice.

The 4-step method
1

Role

Tell it which expert to be.

2

Context

Who you are, what you want.

3

Command

Exactly what to make.

4

Ask first

Make it ask questions before it answers.

The prompt

Act as a social media expert. I'm the founder of GoBananasAI and I'm looking to enhance my LinkedIn presence. Please generate a LinkedIn article about how ChatGPT can boost productivity for sales teams. You must ask me questions before generating your output.

ChatGPT

How to use it

  1. 1

    Assign a role

Tell it what kind of expert to be. “Act as a social media expert” beats “write a post”.

  2. 2

    Give context

A line or two on who you are and what you are trying to do.

  3. 3

    Give a clear command

Say exactly what you want it to make, and be specific.

  4. 4

Tell it to ask questions first

Add “ask me questions before you answer”. This is the step that lifts the quality most.

Tips

  • Answer its questions in plain bullet points. It does not need perfect formatting.
  • Then refine: “make it more conversational”, “shorten to 500 words”, “add a hook”.
